President’s Piece October 2024

We have just wrapped up our 2024 National Virtual Conference and I have one word. Wow!

Thank you to our Gold Sponsors: Neuron’s VR, and WiseCare; and our Silver Sponsors: Aged Care Music Resources, Wisdom Activities, and Resparke. Congratulations to ARTA member, Ruby Tabucanon for winning the lucky door prize of 1 year’s free membership from our prize sponsor, Golden Carers. Without your support conferences like this are not possible.

Our keynote speakers – Michael Verde, and Daniel Gray – set the scene for both our days, and for our other presenters; showcasing research, innovation, and global learnings. I feel it also offered a sense of excitement for the future of Recreational Therapy. The array of first-time speakers, student speakers and well-known industry leaders allowed such rich sharing and discussion over the two days.

I want to also thank Diana and Jodie in the office, the tireless board, and Lesley Fox, who all ensured a smooth program over both days.

We had questions to the board, primarily centered around an update from our application with AHPA. Charlise and I are meeting with AHPA this week to discuss some wording in our constitution which needs to be clarified. The short of this COULD be that to obtain membership within AHPA and receive all the benefits associated with that membership, from the date we join any members would have to be only AQF7 (degree and above). Whilst we don’t yet have all the answers, should this be what is needed, we would put this to vote in a General Meeting, prior to the AGM in October. We would likely explore the grandfathering of all current FINANCIAL members should the vote to join AHPA go ahead.

Charlise and I are also meeting with AHANA (Allied Health Assistants’ National Association) to discuss possible linkages for Cert IV Leisure and Health qualified professionals seeking a national association.

There is a lot happening and we for your patience while we work to understand the complexity of all options to move forward, and know communication will come out to all members as soon as we are clear.

This month we also celebrate a special 15 year anniversary as a national body – Diversional Therapy Australia officially came into being on 14th October 2009. Reflecting on this time, so much has changed but there is so much more to come to ensure our position and security as an allied heath profession.

Thank you for your continued engagement in your professional association. Without members there isn’t an association and we welcome feedback and support anytime.
