President Piece – 7 April 2017

As we leave summer behind us, Northern NSW and Queensland have been experiencing extreme weather the last couple of weeks. My thoughts go out to those members and their families that have been effected by Cyclone Debbie and the flooding. The board hopes all members stay safe during this difficult time.

With May just around the corner, preparations for Diversional and Recreation Therapy Week are in full swing. This years DRT Week will be held from 8th to 14th May and the theme is Innovation and Expectation. New resources will be added to the website in the coming weeks, so please keep an eye out for these. It would be wonderful to see all the different ways our members celebrate, so please consider submitting an article for future newsletters. And also earn PD points!

The board and office have been in full swing planning and organising this year’s conference. This year it will be held at the beautiful Royal on the Park in Brisbane the 6th and 7th October. This year’s pre-conference workshop is Activities, Activities, Activities and will be held on the 5th October. Please keep an eye on the website for more details coming soon and for when registration opens. Call for papers is still open for anyone interested in presenting a paper or e-poster. There are prizes for best first time presenter and best e-poster.

Last month international liaison board member Darren Robinson and myself attended the first International Therapeutic Recreation Coalition meeting. The meeting was held via the web with representatives from USA, Canada, Japan, South Africa, New Zealand and of course Australia. It was a wonderful experience to have so many passionate people from around the world come together to move Diversional Therapy/Therapeutic Recreation forward globally. The Coalition will meet 6 monthly via the web and currently are drafting an article on TR Globalisation to be submitted to the American Therapeutic Recreation Association annual publication. I will pass on more information as it becomes available.

Easter is just about upon us and I am sure everyone is busy preparing to celebrate with not only family and friends, but also our clients. And also observe ANZAC day. Please stay safe over the holiday period and remember no to over indulge in chocolate eggs!!

From the Board, we wish you all a happy and safe Easter.
