Hi members,
Happy DRT Week!!
May has snuck up on us and it is that time of year when we celebrate Diversional and Recreational Therapy. This year, DRT week will be celebrated 7th – 13th May.
This years theme ‘Out of the Box’ is about focusing beyond the activity to people’s quality of life, looking at theory to change and improve our practice and exploring freedom, differences, cohesion and unity. DRT Week provides us with an opportunity to step outside our box and spread the DRT message to the community. It is time to come together and celebrate our successes and all our hard work to enrich the lives of those we work with.
DRT week provides me with the opportunity to showcase Diversional Therapy with my colleagues and the community. I share with them my passion for diversional therapy and the importance of leisure in our lives. It gives me a chance to reflect on why I chose to become a DT and renews my passion. For me, I love seeing the happiness and joy in the patients faces when we try new activities (and they work out!), go places we haven’t been before and the laughter when the cookies or cake don’t turn out but its ok cause we will still eat them. That is what it is all about for me.
I love being part of the association, I have been since graduating uni and more recently being involved on the board. I enjoy being connect to people who share a similar passion to my own and the support they provide. I am very lucky to be part of a large network group and am thankful for all the support we give each other. What does being a DT mean to you? What does being a member of the association mean to you? How do you celebrate DRT week? I would love to hear from you.
This is also a time of year to recognise our strengths. As DRT’s we have so many strengths and research reveals that people who use their strengths everyday are:
– 3x more likely to report having an excellent quality of life
– 6x more likely to be engaged at work
Take the scientific survey to find out exactly what your strengths are: http://www.viacharacter.org/www/
I have completed mine and humour and kindness are 2 of my biggest strengths. What are yours?
Don’t forget to visit the website for DRT Week ideas and posters. A4 and A3 size posters are available bow to download and print.
And lastly, an early reminder that membership renewal is due in July. It’s time to start getting together all your PD points for the year. If you are still a little short, go to the website for dates for upcoming workshops or complete our new online learning.
Take care,
Kylie Rice
