President’s Piece June 2023

Hello members,

Another busy month has arrived and I can’t believe that we are halfway through 2023 – where has this time gone? Many things to report on this month. I would like to thank all those who attended ARTA’s two town hall meetings last month. There was a huge amount of discussion, feedback, and ideas which we thank you and continue to welcome.

Last month I sent on behalf of ARTA and its membership a letter requesting an urgent meeting with Anika Wells. We did receive confirmation that our request has been received attention and is being considered. Thank you to those who provided their time to assist in this initial contact with Minister Wells and for the ongoing work you do for the next phase of contact.

Whilst we are grateful of receiving this response, the ARTA board and some members are working on a more detailed letter/response as previously mentioned to send to all avenues (Parliament – Local and Federal, Minister Wells and the Prime Minister of Australia) around the concerns to changes of the funding arrangements and regulations related to care minutes. This will ensure that the ARTA membership and others within industry are heard and represented.

However, I need to ask a huge favour from our membership. Whilst ARTA will advocate and reach out on behalf of its membership – we would be only counted as one voice. Can I ask that you provide even the shortest email about your own concerns, experiences, and feedback to places such as:
• Your local member for parliament
• OPAN
• Minister Wells

The more leaders hear from those experiencing what is being asked of them and what is occurring, the louder our voice is heard and recognised. We need you to be an advocate with us, as this is something we must do together and not leave to others to undertake.

I wanted to thank Daniella and Charlise who represented ARTA at the recent Dementia and Recreation Conference in Melbourne and I hope that many of you dropped by to say hello.

Early Bird tickets are now available for our conference in September 7th-9th in Parramatta. I am excited to report that we have locked in some amazing keynote speakers. These being Jason Van Genderen and his wife Megan: the voice behind the recent much loved lived experience and film – Everybody’s Oma, along with Dr Mark Cross: Psychiatrist specialising in adult psychiatry – with an interest in sexuality and adult mental health, but also recognising the value that Recreational Therapy has within this space. Our preconference workshop on 7th September, is also shaping up to be an innovative, creative and interactive experience – keep an eye out for registrations also.

Call for papers is still open, and I do encourage you to consider entering an abstract. The sharing of posters or presentations of the amazing work that you do, enables the sharing of ideas and builds on our professional development for members.

Thank you again to those who have assisted the board with many of the Communities of Practice. Again, I ask our members if you have some capacity and want to assist, please reach out to the office and speak with Diana or Jodie. I also would like to reiterate that your voices have power, and please consider reaching out to peak bodies and parliament about your concerns which again help build strength and recognition to the issues we are presently facing.

This month you will also be receiving your membership renewal. The changes to the Constitution will take effect for this year’s membership renewal. It will reflect the agreed levels as part of the constitution. This is part of our process to be aligned with the requirements for the application of membership to Allied Health Professions Australia. If you do have questions, please contact the office regarding your membership.

Thank you all for what you do, and until next time, stay warm and safe.
